Putting it on the line

Posted by Eric Fisher On January 5

In terms of overall picks, I enter the playoffs coming off my best back-to-back weeks of the season, going a season-best 10-5-1 last week after being 9-6-1 the previous week. I posted a terrific playoff record last season, and hope to do the same this postseason.

My “best bet,” unfortunately, is the Cowboys (-2) over the Seahawks. Head coach Pete Carroll did a terrific job getting the Seahawks into the playoffs, but their vaunted ground attack runs into a terrific Cowboys linebacker corps. Except for linebacker Bobby Wagner, the Seahawks defense is very average. The Cowboys should contain the Seahawks offense while their own offense scores enough to secure the victory.

The Eagles, the defending Super Bowl champions, are the biggest underdog (-6½ points) of the opening weekend. With their experience, and the way their defensive line is playing, I would be surprised if the Eagles were blown out. And we know how the Eagles relish their underdog role. That’s why the Eagles are “my other top pick.”

I’m not sure the Eagles will win the game, but I like two other road underdogs, the Colts (+1 at the Texans) and the Chargers (+3 at the Ravens) to win their games. I could see the Ravens winning by a Justin Tucker field goal, but that would still give me a push.

Here are my selections for wild card weekend:

(Home team in CAPS)

(Winning team against the line in bold)

COLTS +1 at TEXANS

COWBOYS -2 vs. Seahawks

Chargers +3 at RAVENS

Eagles +6½ at BEARS

Best bet: COWBOYS -2 vs. Seahawks

Other top picks: Eagles +6½ at BEARS

Last week: 10-5-1 (124-135-11 this season)

Best Bet: 1-0 (8-9 this season)

Other top picks: 1-3 (32-33-3 this season)
