Top 10 list: Flyers’ hot starts

Posted by Ron Opher On October 8

The Flyers got off to a good start in the 2011-12 season, going 4-0-1 in their first 5 games.

A good start is always welcome, and is quite often for the Flyers a springboard to a successful season (with a handful of exceptions, mostly in the early ’80).

With that as a backdrop, we look at the top 10 Flyers’ starts in team history:

10. (tie) 10-5-4 in inaugural season of 1967-68, 1st place in NHL West Division and 1st playoff appearance

10. (tie) 2-2 then 12-2 on the last night Pelle Lindbergh stepped on Spectrum ice on 11/9/85 before he died in a tragic car accident early the next morning. The Flyers extended the win streak to 13 and a 15-2 start, but the emotionally exhausted team lost to Rangers in the first round, 3 games to 2

10 (tie). 6-1 in 2007-8 and a trip to the conference finals

9. 20-4-4 in 1977-78 and trip to conference finals

8. 17-3-6 in 2003-4 and a trip to game 7 of the conference finals

7. 3-0 and 10-4-1 in 2009-10 and a trip to the cup finals

6. 7-1, 18-4-2 behind rookie goalie Ron Hextall to game 7 of cup finals in 1986-87

5. 6-2-1 and 17-4-5 in Mike Keenan’s first season and trip to cup final in 1984-85

4. 5-0-1, 22-4-7 in 1975-76 and a trip to cup finals

3. 12-3-2 and 26-6-5 in 1974-75 and second cup win

2. 4-0, 16-6-2 in 1973-74 and first cup win

1. 1-1, then 35-game unbeaten streak left them 26-1-10, then 41-5-13 before losing in 1979-80 cup final
