Andre Delsol’s run at a world record and a personal goal of seeing 30 NHL games in 30 NHL cities in 29 days headed westward again – to the only WHA arena still being used in the NHL. The former Northlands Coliseum, now Rexall Place in Edmonton, is the building where Ron Hextall famously said that he would gladly trade the Conn Smythe Trophy for the hardware in the other room. Not even 24 hours after virtually ridding myself of my preconceived notions of Detroit, I found myself in Edmonton, Alberta. The city I’ve openly heard players spite and describe as the only place they’d refuse to play. Looks like I’ve got some more harsh stereotypes to debunk. Within the first few minutes in the concourse of Rexall Place, I heard three ladies working at a beer kiosk asking each other what state Baltimore is in. I cracked a smile at their wild guesses and even chuckled after they settled on Oregon. “Yeah, Baltimore, Oregon. That sounds right.” (read more)…
